On Property Management & Second Careers

REAM: What first drew you to the real estate industry?

Lively: I am First Nations Indian and my tribe back home was in need of help with the alcoholism and drug addiction. They hired me and sent me to school to get my degree in drug and alcohol counseling. I continued in that field after moving to Arizona in 2003 and worked for Value Options with dually diagnosed clients – clients with addictions and mental health issues/disorders. I left the addictions field after seven years, I was burnt out and no longer effective for my clients.

I decided on real estate for several reasons, I was looking for something part time as my husband and I owned a Harley Davison dealership here in Arizona and a beach cleaning business in Rocky Point. But mostly I was looking for something that was not as stressful as addictions counseling.

REAM: Why did you decide to start your own company?

Lively: I started Regal Elite Realty a lot sooner than I had anticipated. I was taking my broker classes and just about to test with the school when I was approached by one of my clients that I had been working with for just over a year. We had just started managing 12 commercial buildings for him and he was unhappy with my broker and the management company I worked for. He was going to leave and offered me the 12 commercial buildings if I would move up my plan to start my own company. He even offered to help me financially to get the business started. I did not need his help financially, but with his support, guidance and mentoring I was able to open up Regal Elite Realty LLC

REAM: Tell us about your real estate company.

Lively: We focus on property management. Most of my owners have been with me for more than seven years (as have most of my tenants). The relationships we’ve forged over the years is certainly the best part of the job. It’s not without its challenges though. Working with clients who have never rented a home before can be difficult. I try to work with them and educate them on the process. I think by the time they’re settled in to their first rental, they’re prepared for their next experience.

REAM: Tell us about your first sale.

Lively: My first sale was my own home! It was five years ago, we closed in two weeks. It was the easiest transaction.

REAM: What are some of your hobbies outside of the office?

Lively: I love the outdoors. You can find me hiking or riding my motorcycle. I also enjoy working out and spending time with my three nephews.

REAM: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Lively: My goal is to continue to build Regal Elite Realty by bringing on more rental properties and more staff. As much as I want to grow Regal Elite Realty, I never want to get so big that I’m not hands on with my owners and my tenants. Sometimes bigger isn’t always better!
